[00:00:00] Speaker A: You want to go low carb? Let's talk about three steps that helped us when we started our low carb journey, ketogenic journey, about five years ago. [00:00:08] Speaker B: The first step, any military operation, you have to start with a plan. The best way to go about making a plan is with the five W's plus how. So we'll start with who? [00:00:20] Speaker A: Who is you? You're the one you're the one deciding that you want to kick the carbs out of your life. But here's the thing. Are you doing it alone? Are you doing it with your family? Who do you have on your team? You just need to know these things. [00:00:34] Speaker B: Yeah. It's not that you're going to do anything much different, but go into it knowing that you have somebody encouraging you or you have somebody discouraging you. [00:00:45] Speaker A: Right. That's really crucial, because the what is it's? A ketogenic lifestyle or a low carb, no carb lifestyle away from the standard American diet? And once you make this trip, once you get on this journey, for us, it was forever. So that's the what? [00:01:06] Speaker B: And it's so different. [00:01:08] Speaker A: Oh, it's so different. [00:01:09] Speaker B: Right. The third W is, when do you start this? [00:01:14] Speaker A: You don't want to be starting this lifestyle when you have a big holiday event coming up. If you've got Christmas or if you have a birthday or wedding anniversary. [00:01:27] Speaker B: I thought about it. Yeah. I thought about it as a food holiday. If you're having a food holiday upcoming, don't start now, don't start then. It's going to really tempt you to stop doing this so that you can enjoy your food holiday. My recommendation would be give yourself at least a week. You need at least a week. Better a month, but at least a week. [00:01:53] Speaker A: Where? Where are we doing this? Well, in your kitchen, because you're going to need to take care of yourself and your own food needs at this point and not rely on the packaged foods. [00:02:05] Speaker B: This isn't going to happen in a restaurant. This isn't going to happen with food delivery. This is going to be you in your kitchen. The next most important step, in my opinion, is why. [00:02:16] Speaker A: I think it's the most important step. [00:02:18] Speaker B: That's fair. [00:02:19] Speaker A: Why? Why are you choosing to do this? Why are you deciding, I need to kick carbs out of my life? [00:02:26] Speaker B: Is it for your health? Awesome. Is it a weight loss journey? Is it, I have diabetes and I would like to try to control this on my own. Is it, I have a metabolic disorder and if I don't control this on my own, it may lead me to diabetes. So you really need to know your why, and our recommendation is write it down. Write it down somewhere that you can see it. [00:02:49] Speaker A: Right. [00:02:50] Speaker B: Write it down somewhere that you can refer back to it often so that you remind yourself, here's why I'm doing this. [00:02:57] Speaker A: Absolutely. And how are you going to do it? Well, you're going to follow these three steps. [00:03:01] Speaker B: We talked through the plan, the who, what, when, where, why, and how. The next step is prepare. I recommend that you actually do take the time for this step, the first step in preparing tools. [00:03:14] Speaker A: Get some tools. And there are some really good ones out there. [00:03:17] Speaker B: Yeah. Because this is so different. It's not something that we've been taught all the way growing up through school. We didn't learn it from our parents. This is something that's really different. So we recommend having some tools in your toolbox that you can pick up and use and really help you as you start out on this journey. And the first one that we recommend is a book that we used called The Ketozone Diet by Dr. Colbert. We are not affiliated with any of these tools. Y'all. [00:03:47] Speaker A: No. [00:03:48] Speaker B: So it's not like we're getting anything out of this. These are just the tools that we really found were extremely useful to us. [00:03:56] Speaker A: This book is just easy to read, it's simple to understand, not super sciency, and it just will help you get started on your journey. [00:04:04] Speaker B: Yeah, it's got enough science in it that it will answer some of the questions that you may have. It's got a couple of recipes. It's just a good resource. The next one, it's an app. [00:04:15] Speaker A: We all have apps, right? [00:04:17] Speaker B: And you've got to have to have this one. It's called carb manager. [00:04:21] Speaker A: And this app is going to be your decision maker. You're going to use this app every single day, and I highly recommend it. [00:04:31] Speaker B: Yeah. This is one where you don't have to make a decision on whether or not you eat a thing. You type it into carb manager. It will give you a keto avoid, a keto good, a keto in moderation. It will really give you all of the information you need about the food that you're thinking about eating. And for us, as we were starting this journey, not knowing how do we even decide what to eat, carb Manager was a lifesaver. [00:05:01] Speaker A: Absolutely. [00:05:02] Speaker B: We would use it to input everything that we put in our mouth. Like, it was all foods, all drinks to include water. We put everything into Carb Manager, and it really was the coach that we needed in order to make this transition to a ketogenic lifestyle. [00:05:22] Speaker A: That's right. There are other websites for recipes. We all need to know that there are options out there so that we don't feel like we are doing without things. So ketoconnect net great recipes. Those guys over there have done a great job at putting together a website that gives you recipes that you need in order to be able to succeed at getting the processed foods out of your kitchen. And life. [00:05:53] Speaker B: I'm looking at it right now. One of the cool things that they have on their website is keto copycats. If you start missing a thing, you can go right there. To keto copycats and see if maybe there isn't something that you can follow a ketogenic recipe to get that taste that you're craving at the time. So really, those three tools are definitely ones that you'll want to put into your toolbox with probably the most important being carb manager, that is your go to. [00:06:27] Speaker A: So the next thing you want to do when you're preparing is prepare your mind, because our mindset about what we eat is crucial to success. Fat is good, carbs are bad. This is absolutely opposite of everything that we've ever learned about food or been taught. Especially as middle aged adults who grew up in the 80s. We were really hard to convince that fats are good. [00:06:57] Speaker B: Yeah, because we were all taught a low fat, high carb diet that was the way to do things. And yet we have seen over the past 50 years of that diet being the standard American diet. We are so much sicker than we have ever been as a nation, as a population. [00:07:19] Speaker A: Right. [00:07:19] Speaker B: That diet didn't work, y'all. [00:07:22] Speaker A: No, it didn't work. That experiment went very, very bad. And so in order for us to stop the experiment, we have to change our mindset. [00:07:33] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:07:33] Speaker A: Fat is good, carbs are bad. [00:07:36] Speaker B: The next step in order to prepare is make a menu. And I recommend 21 meals. Sit down and make yourself at least a week's menu. And each thing that you're going to eat during each meal is what I would do. [00:07:51] Speaker A: Yeah, absolutely. Make sure that you even check with carb manager and put it in there. See what works, see what ingredients work the best for keeping your carbs as low as you can within the goals that you have made for yourself. [00:08:06] Speaker B: With carb manager, you can go back to your why and then you can set that in carb manager. I'm looking for weight loss and how much weight and how quickly are you looking to lose it. It will work with you to do all of that. So as you're making a menu, it really is a good idea to use carb manager. And then from that menu, the next step is then make a list. [00:08:29] Speaker A: Make a list. Make the list of the required things that you need in order to go forward and go to the store, because you're going to have to go to the store because you probably don't have all of the things that you are going to need on your new way of eating. [00:08:46] Speaker B: Right? And at this point, I wouldn't recommend throwing anything away. No, I wouldn't recommend doing any of that stuff. Just set the foods that you have right now in your kitchen and pantry. Just set them aside for a minute and make yourself a list of the items you need to follow the menu that you just made and then go get those items. That's what you need to do right now. Don't forget supplements on your list. There are some things that happen inside your body as your body starts transitioning from burning carbohydrates to burning fats. And one of the things is your electrolytes there at the very beginning start to get really messed up. And so it takes them a few days to get back in sync. And during those days, you might find that some supplements are helpful. Salt, potassium, magnesium. There's a lot of information out there on which supplements, how to get them, but we recommend that you add some supplements to your list. [00:09:47] Speaker A: But do some research. Yeah, do some research. And if you're on medications and you're seeing a doctor for anything, make sure that you check with all of that. [00:09:55] Speaker B: That's right. [00:09:56] Speaker A: Okay. [00:09:56] Speaker B: And there are foods that provide the absolutely. Provide all of the electrolytes that you could get from the supplements. [00:10:02] Speaker A: Just pay attention. [00:10:03] Speaker B: Yeah. Avocados are a great one, but some people don't like avocados. [00:10:07] Speaker A: Right. The next thing is buy the best food and ingredients that you can afford. You're not going to be eating out as much. You're not going to be getting takeout. You're not going to be having things delivered as much. You're not going to be eating as many packaged box, processed foods. [00:10:26] Speaker B: Right. [00:10:27] Speaker A: So take the money that you would have spent doing that and invest that into what you're putting into your kitchen. [00:10:33] Speaker B: Yeah. Get yourself the best food you can. We like to make this fun, and we really like our food to taste good. [00:10:40] Speaker A: Right. [00:10:41] Speaker B: And so one of the ways we get there is by buying the best ingredients that we can buy. And then the last thing in preparing we've sort of mentioned it already, is prepare your mind that you may not feel well for a couple of days. Day one will probably be fine. Day two, three, maybe even four, you might not feel great. Use that feeling as a confirmation that you are on the right track. Your body is making the transition from burning carbs to burning fats. And it takes it a minute for everything to get back working again. [00:11:16] Speaker A: The way I felt whenever I was going through it, I felt like I was in withdrawals. And the fact that I was in withdrawals meant to me, this needed to happen. It really did need to happen. And it did not last that long. And it does go away. [00:11:34] Speaker B: That's right. And just go into it knowing it. Be ready with some supplements and be encouraged that you're on the right track. So we've talked about plan. We've talked about how to prepare the last step. Proceed. [00:11:49] Speaker A: Yeah, proceed. Marching orders, march out. [00:11:52] Speaker B: That's right. This is day one of the rest of your life. You are changing your lifestyle. Food is so important from a cultural perspective, from a societal perspective, it really is a big deal. And for you to go from what is the standard American diet? Which means that that is the standard diet of your culture when you're going from there to a non standard diet, this is a big deal. This is the first day of the rest of your life. We remember the day that we made the decision and started a ketogenic lifestyle. [00:12:29] Speaker A: February 5, 2019. [00:12:31] Speaker B: That's right. [00:12:31] Speaker A: I remember that day so clear because it really was a complete turnaround in. What? My entire thinking about food. What I didn't realize was it was forever. It can be forever. [00:12:44] Speaker B: Yeah, for us it was. And it started the journey that you've been seeing us embark on. We ended up building a farm. [00:12:54] Speaker A: It was that important out of this journey. [00:12:57] Speaker B: We really did. This lifestyle is so transformative that we made the decision that we want good food so badly that we're going to do it ourselves. We're going to grow the absolute best food we can. So this ketogenic lifestyle really can change your life? [00:13:18] Speaker A: It absolutely changed ours. [00:13:20] Speaker B: Oh, it did. [00:13:21] Speaker A: Absolutely. We want to know how you're doing. Are you considering doing it? Are you already on your keto journey eating a low carb lifestyle? Let us know in the comments, because we want to create this community around good food and people taking care of their lives in a healthful way. [00:13:39] Speaker B: We are so excited, we really are, that you've made this decision that you're starting on this journey, or if you're already on this journey, if you're an expert, share some tips, share some things that really helped you get started. Y'all, I can't tell you how excited we are.
